Born in the Ukrainian village of Gradizhsk, in 1885, Sonia Delaunay drew inspiration from her childhood all her long life. Named Sara Stern at birth, the painter, artisan, and designer began to be called Sonia at the age of seven, when her parents sent her to live with wealthier relatives in St. Petersburg. In 1905, Sonia moved to Paris and there she met and married Robert Delaunay. Together the two experimented with color and played major roles in the Paris avant-garde. Working in diverse mediums such as fashion, painting, and mosaics, Sonia often referred back to Ukrainian craft traditions, while also creating modern designs and successfully depicting the spirit of her time. (The house of Dior, in 1968, recreated one of her 1920s dresses; and Karl Lagerfeld revisited her work in his designs for Fendi.) With approximately 200 objects representing all phases of Delaunay’s art, this exhibition at the Bard Graduate Center includes furniture, clothing items, and jewelry. —Jeanne Malle
