Alessandra Sanguinetti is Argentinian, yet she’s spent the last nine years photographing one of the most remote rural corners of America. Sanguinetti first came across the forgotten Wisconsin town of Black River Falls in a book by Michael Lesy, Wisconsin Death Trip. As a child, she plucked the book at random from her parents’ bookshelf in Buenos Aires. Lesy’s portraits of the town’s lost generation struck Sanguinetti with the fact of her own mortality, and stayed with her through the years. When she traveled to the Wisconsin town in 2014, she brought her camera. Last year, Sanguinetti published a book chronicling the experience. Now these mesmerizing photographs are on view in the 11th arrondissement. —Elena Clavarino
