Paolo Roversi: Along The Way

Paolo Roversi, Charles, Paris, 2005.

540 W 25th St, New York, NY 10001

The surreal photographs of Paolo Roversi blur the lines between picture and painting. With saturated color, sharp shadows, and unusual shutter speeds, they almost seem a new species of imagery. Diane Arbus, August Sander, and Robert Frank are three big inspirations for Roversi. He also draws from Byzantine architecture and the culture of the city he was born in: Ravenna, Italy. “Along The Way” features photographs from the 1990s through the present day, and emphasizes Roversi’s numerous collaborations with fashion industry artists. This is his first solo show with Pace since 2019. Most of the shots were taken on Polaroid film in Roversi’s Paris studio. —Henry McGrath
