John Cazale and Al Pacino in Dog Day Afternoon.

Some call it “The Gold Guy,” others “The Big O.” For people in the industry, an Oscar can mean the leap from mere talent to major star. Yet a surprising number of Hollywood’s greatest actors and directors never managed to get their hands on the statue—or even a nomination—from Rita Hayworth to Donald Sutherland. Awards season is approaching, which means the Museum of the Moving Image will throw its annual anti-tribute to the ceremony, highlighting films and figures snubbed by the Academy. Think of the revered actor John Cazale, indelible in the first two Godfather films, Dog Day Afternoon, and The Deer Hunter. The museum will also be airing noteworthy titles like Rosemary’s Baby, The Quiet Man, and The Magnificent Ambersons. —Elena Clavarino
