Siemen Dijkstra: À Bois Perdu

July 7 – Sept 6, 2020
121 Rue de Lille, 75007 Paris, France

Vincent van Gogh employed thick, curved brush strokes to evoke a feeling of constant movement. The Dutch artist Siemen Dijkstra achieves a similar vibe of aliveness, but in a totally different medium—the reduction woodcut (à bois perdu)—which sees him creating landscapes of leaves, grass, and mist by cutting out layers of color from a single slab of wood, then printing one after another onto paper. Seven exhibition rooms house the artist’s works from wood—some of the larger editions incorporating as many as 18 colors—as well as his drawings, gouaches, and watercolor paintings. —J.V.
