Born in Australia in 1972, Shaun Gladwell is an artist who works in many mediums, including virtual reality. He has produced video art for a 2013 concert version of Richard Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman (the sailing motif was replaced with a surfing motif). He has made burial videos of road-killed kangaroos. More recently, Gladwell has been interested in the way human beings move—skateboarding, unicycling, spinning on their heads (with a helmet). “I’ve always loved activity that rethinks prescribed function or design function in environments,” he said in 2019. “I’ve been really inspired by that constant questioning of the function of space.” His first solo exhibition in Melbourne in 13 years presents new paintings as well as a new video work called Homo Suburbiensis, in which human movement is challenged by objects artful and ordinary. —L.J.
