Serra/Seurat: Drawings

Georges Seurat, Reclining Man (Study for “Bathers at Asnières”), 1883–84.

While most know Georges Seurat for his pointillist paintings, works such as the delicate but mathematically precise A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, fewer know that drawing was a large part of the artist’s oeuvre. Throughout his career he used conté crayons on rough paper to make studies for his canvases and pictures complete in themselves. An admirer of these works in pencil and crayon, the sculptor Richard Serra has picked out drawings by Seurat for this exhibition. They will be displayed with Serra’s own series, “Ramble Drawings,” an exploration of weight and gravity. —Elena Clavarino
