Sylvia Khoury’s thriller Selling Kabul is set in 2013, in the middle of America’s “war on terror” in Afghanistan. Despite how small their apartment is, Afiya and her husband, Jawid, let Afiya’s brother Taroon hide in their closet. As a former interpreter for the U.S. Army, Taroon is a target of the increasingly powerful Taliban. Selling Kabul premiered at Williamstown Theatre Festival in July 2019, a year before the U.S. military left Afghanistan, and has toured ever since. Shadi Ghaheri directs the play’s D.C. debut. —Jensen Davis
