Seeing is Believing

The Museum of Art and Design / New York

How do saints and martyrs appear today? Perhaps they can be found in the forlorn young women that populate Judith Schaechter’s psychedelic creations. In her hands, the stained-glass window is much more than a relic of the past. Schaechter’s Seeing is Believing, a series of panels commissioned by the Museum of Arts and Design, strays from her typical female-centered subject matter and instead presents a color field of vibrant patterns, a spread of blooms expanding and contracting against a sea of leaves. Seeing is Believing transforms medieval iconography into a modern, biomorphic aesthetic, yet never surrenders the spirituality of a classic cathedral window. —Nicole Matthias
