At the peak of the pandemic, when theaters the world over were closed, one began to wonder if the maxim “The show must go on” would be relegated to the past. But now the world is returning to semi-normal and performers are back to breaking their legs. At the San Francisco Playhouse, which has been streaming plays for the past 14 months, tickets from the balcony to the orchestra are available, and seats are filling up—with two empty spaces between each party, of course. On the roster are three plays: Hold These Truths, The Song of Summer, and Starting Here, Starting Now. The first is a one-man show based on hours of interviews with a survivor of Japanese internment during W.W. II. The second is a comedic musical about a pop star who returns to his hometown, where he finds romance on top of respite from the paparazzi. And the third culls from the oeuvre of collaborators Richard Maltby, Jr. (lyrics) and David Shire (music) to make a new musical about the labyrinthine dynamics of modern love. The mix is eclectic and speaks to the spirit of San Francisco’s theater tradition. All three will still be streaming for those who remain at home. —C.J.F.
