Ruth Orkin’s best-known photograph captures an American art student named Jinx Allen walking in Florence in 1951. Men leer on all sides, some frozen mid–catcall. Titled American Girl in Italy, the photograph is part of Orkin’s series documenting women traveling alone in Europe. This was not a novel concept for Orkin, who at 17 convinced her parents to let her bike from their home in Los Angeles to New York. Relying on hitchhiking to cross the major distances, she visited San Francisco; Chicago; Philadelphia; Washington, D.C.; Boston; and New York. Over the four-month period, she took more than 350 photographs, cataloging them diligently in a scrapbook. Forty of these images, along with Orkin’s own notes from the time, are on display here. —Paulina Prosnitz
