This year’s edition of the Rome Film Festival takes a long view with its presentation of the TV series Romulus, which dramatizes the myth of Romulus and Remus, the twin brothers who founded ancient Rome. It returns to the present with Gabriele Salvatores’s Fuori Era Primavera (It was Spring Outside), a documentary about the lockdown in Italy, a country hit particularly hard by the coronavirus. Held in venues throughout the city, the 15th edition of the festival is also featuring Francesco, a film on the current pope created by the Oscar-nominated Russian director Evgeny Afineevsky and made up of footage from recent interviews. While the 2019 film The Two Popes explored Pope Francis’s ideals in the abstract, this documentary sees his ideals in action. Francis comments on climate change and meets with Greta Thunberg. He abolishes the secrecy policy surrounding sexual abuse cases in the church. He brings attention to the twin migrant crises in the Mediterranean and on the southern border of the U.S. And he uses the strongest language yet in favor of allowing same-sex marriage within the church.
