Robert Wilson has cultivated a new artistic genre: video portraiture. The eminent American theater director and playwright, known for epochal collaborations like Einstein on the Beach, has created a series of life-size video works of animals, artists, and celebrities, embedding these subjects in famous paintings from art history. Drawing from his decades of experiment in the arts, Wilson combines light, sound, and movement to provide a fresh take on the portrait. These fascinating works feature performers such as Lady Gaga and Brad Pitt. —Thalia Bonas
