Growing up in Port Arthur, Texas, Robert Rauschenberg’s view of the world was narrow. The restless son of a Fundamentalist father who worked for Gulf State Utilities, Rauschenberg flew the coop in 1944, when he was drafted into the U.S. Navy. After that, he commenced on a life of artistic exploration and expansion. In the mid–1960s, Rauschenberg traveled to Japan for the first time, returning throughout the decade. In 1975, he took up a residency in India, where he found himself surrounded by a chaotic yet dazzling world of color. Then came China, in 1982, a visit that affected him so deeply he launched a global series of traveling exhibitions under the Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange. This exhibition looks back on that project’s legacy, pairing artworks by overseas artists with pieces by Rauschenberg. “Every time I’ve moved,” he once said, “my work has changed radically.” —Elena Clavarino
