People are a reflection of the worlds to which they belong. This was certainly true of Robert Mapplethorpe, who frequented the bright lights of high-profile New York as well as the city’s darker underground scene. He photographed people from both realms, creating intimate, powerful portraits. Whether classical studies or celebrations of gay male sexuality, all were a quest for “the beautiful image.” For this exhibition the French artist Jean-Marc Bustamante has chosen a series of portraits that highlight the diversity of Mapplethorpe’s interests and oeuvre. —E.C.
