Robert Elfgen: Higgs-Boson

Apr 28 – July 3, 2021
Oranienburger Str. 18, 10178 Berlin, Germany

The multidisciplinary German artist Robert Elfgen creates paintings that are allegories about seeing and the way meaning changes before your eyes. In his landscapes painted on wood, evocative shades of pink, blue, and purple dissolve into abstraction, hailing the worlds of childhood books and surrealistic tales even as they subtly reveal the streaks and pools of the wood’s grain. The works bring traditions of German idealism and Romanticism to mind, but with a modern twist. In the exhibition “Higgs-Boson”—the title refers to a phenomenon in particle physics, which makes an elementary particle difficult to detect—25 works test and reward close looking. —E.C.
