Richard Gerstl: Inspiration—Legacy

Sept 27, 2019 – Jan 20, 2020
Museumsplatz 1, 1070 Wien, Austria

He was a tortured soul, the Austrian painter Richard Gerstl. In 1908, depressed over the end of his affair with Mathilde Schoenberg (Arnold’s wife), as well as the lack of critical interest in his paintings, Gerstl killed himself at just 25. The Leopold Museum places Gerstl’s psychologically expressive portraits in context, speculating on which artists he looked to for inspiration (Van Gogh, Bonnard), and arguing for his influence on artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. —J.V.
