Richard Artschwager: New Mexico

Streaming on Sprüth Magers

When he was a boy in the 1930s, the late Richard Artschwager moved with his family from Washington, D.C., to a small town in New Mexico called Las Cruces. They moved there by car. In 2006, a much older Artschwager revisited New Mexico, and created a series of works on paper that show the hand of a master. Drawn in soft earthy pastel, this lesser known collection differs from his other bodies of work. It seems Artschwager is reflecting, softly, on the road trip, on his childhood, on the nuances of revisiting a place that lives in memory. —E.C.
