“As an artist,” says the curator Marilena Koutsoukou, “Prince Nikolaos is always drawn to open spaces, and nature has been an integral theme and presence in his work. With this exhibition, he turns his lens to the Greek earth.” The artist’s full title is HRH Prince Nikolaos of Greece and Denmark. He was born in 1969, was educated in London, and then studied international relations at Brown University; he began exhibiting his photographs in 2015. The focus of this exhibition is the relationship between Greece and it olive trees, grapevines, and the sea. Particularly striking are the photographs of olive trees shot through with bright gold against blackness, as if the trees themselves were a sacred grove of golden fleeces. No doubt Prince Nikolaos knows his Greek mythology, but his art is also a form of ardent environmental activism. —Laura Jacobs
