Historical figures don’t get more colorful than Louis XIV’s kid brother, Philippe—military hero, twice-married founder of the House of Orléans, proud cross-dresser, flaming queen. Known as “Monsieur,” he also immersed himself in composition, seriously enough to have studied with luminaries like Marc-Antoine Charpentier and André Campra and to have scored no fewer than three operatic tragedies. (He got an assist from Charles-Hubert Gervais, another of his music masters.) Jérusalem délivrée, ou la suite d’Armide (Jerusalem Delivered, or the sequel to Armide) derives from the popular epic poems of Torquato Tasso. It was heard in Philippe’s lifetime in the Galérie des Cerfs, at Fontainebleau. And now, here’s a posthumous reprise in concert at the Sun King’s place. The event will be recorded. —Matthew Gurewitsch
