Rear Window

Streaming on White Cube Gallery

For many of us, Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 classic, Rear Window, is a perennial favorite. But during the coronavirus pandemic, the film has been a universal go-to for its lockdown flavor. The photojournalist played by James Stewart is laid up with a broken leg, stuck in his apartment during the dog days of summer. All he can do is look out the window to watch the neighbors through their windows—a dollhouse setup. The doll in his house is Grace Kelly, his socialite girlfriend. And then he sees something odd. It bothers him. He keeps watching. He builds a narrative. He convinces some, but not others. What is real? What is fact? What happened and is happening? White Cube offers an online exhibition of art that invites intense looking while asking these very questions. Among the 11 artists are Jeff Wall, Laurie Simmons, and Carrie Mae Weems. The exhibition is curated by White Cube’s Susanna Greeves. —L.J.
