Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino is known more simply as “Raphael.” He was third in the Renaissance trinity that includes Leonardo and Michelangelo, yet he died much younger than his counterparts, at just 37. Despite Raphael’s early death, his body of work is extensive. This artist, poet, archaeologist, draughtsman, and architect moved through three major phases in his career, which started in Umbria and culminated with his superb Vatican frescoes, completed before his death in 1520. Major works by the master are on loan from the Louvre, Washington’s National Gallery, the Prada, the Uffizi, and the Vatican for one of the most comprehensive Raphael shows of all time. —Elena Clavarino
