In his 2019 comedy special Feelings, Ramy Youssef interlaced jokes with pointed sentences that left his audience momentarily silent, presumably in thought. “Just because you don’t get it, doesn’t mean it’s oppressive,” he said during a commentary on traditional Islamic dress. Youssef was born to Egyptian parents in New York City, in 1991, and his humor is informed by his upbringing as a practicing Muslim in the West. The television shows he’s created, Ramy (2019) and Mo (2022), broach similar topics, confronting the juxtaposition between one’s faith and the surrounding social environment. Despite the complexity of his subject, Youssef somehow remains hilarious. His new special, More Feelings, promises to develop things further. At only 33, Youssef’s profile is rising rapidly. He recently starred in Poor Things, will host S.N.L. on March 30, and clearly has more to say. —Jack Sullivan
More Feelings premieres on HBO and HBO Max March 23.
