Maybe it is best, in the midst of the contemporary culture wars, not to parse but rather just to listen. Chineke!, billed as Europe’s first majority Black and ethnically diverse orchestra, presents Beethoven’s anthem to universal brotherhood. In the revolutionary finale, the choristers of Chineke! Voices join an all-Black vocal quartet. The soprano, mezzo, and bass—Nicole Cabell, Raehann Bryce-Davis, and Ryan Speedo Green—are American; the tenor Zwakele Tshabalala hails from South Africa. It’s unusual to program a curtain raiser for Beethoven’s Ninth, but there will be one on this occasion. George Walker’s Lilacs for voice and orchestra, set to verse by Walt Whitman commemorating Abraham Lincoln, won the Pulitzer Prize for music in 1996 by unanimous choice of the judges. Walker is the first Black composer to have been so honored. Cabell takes the solo part. Kevin John Edusei, of Germany, conducts. —Matthew Gurewitsch
