“I was born in 1935,” the Apulian artist Pino Pascali once said. “The first games I played were based most of all on war. . . . For example, a bean became a bullet, a broomstick and a box held together with a rubber band became a rifle, a rolled-up piece of paper tied to a stool was a cannon, a saucepan was a helmet.” Pascali became a sculptor. The images of war that populated his childhood informed his “Weapon Series”—wooden structures that resemble skeletons. He is also known for his “Fake Sculptures”—shaped canvases that seem to be dimensional but are abstract paintings. A rising star in the Italian Arte Povera scene, Pascali died in 1968, in a motorcycle accident. He was only 32. This 50-work show honors the artist. —Elena Clavarino
