As a young artist, Pablo Picasso frequented the Prado Museum, a place where he could study the Old Masters. One painter in particular caught his eye—El Greco. The work of this painter influenced many: Chaïm Soutine and Marc Chagall, Robert Delaunay and André Derain, Amedeo Modigliani and Diego Rivera. Picasso took him deeply to heart. On drawings made when he was 17, Picasso added the phrases “El Greco, Velázquez, inspire me!” and “I, El Greco.” The subject of this exhibition is El Greco’s impact on Picasso and Analytical Cubism. Highlights include masterpieces such as The Accordionist and The Aficionado. —Elena Clavarino
