In his poem “Do not go gentle into that good night,” Dylan Thomas writes of “Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight.” He might have been writing about Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) and the work he did in the last three years of his life. Fast and furious, the artist churned out energetic expressionist paintings in which the eyes are everything. The year 2023, of course, marks the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s death. This exhibition in Antibes features works produced from 1969 to 1972—colorful, bold, and racing against time. —Laura Jacobs
