Over the last half century, Phyllida Barlow has produced work that implicitly asks, “What is sculpture?” Barlow overwhelms a space with monumental pieces crafted from inexpensive materials—cardboard, fabric, plywood, polystyrene, scrim, and cement. The opposite of polished, her sculptures drum up words like “lopsided” and “ramshackle.” Barlow’s objective? To stop viewers from projecting meaning onto her work. She wants us to view a piece as it is—organized chaos, monumental and awe inspiring. The exhibition “Glimpse,” under vaulted ceilings 21 feet high, presents new site-specific works that engage the architecture of Globe Mills, a collection of late 19th and early 20th century buildings that the gallery has adapted for its use. —Elena Clavarino
