Peter Max: Cosmic Advertising

Oct 14, 2021 – Mar 27, 2022
119 W 23rd St, New York, NY 10011, United States

If you were around in the 1960s the work of Peter Max is imprinted in your retinal memory. Master of trippy graphics in a Day-Glo palette, his stylized sunbursts a symbol of ever-expanding consciousness, Max caught the flower-power flavor of the time. He was born Peter Max Finkelstein in 1937, to German Jewish parents in Berlin. In 1938, the family wisely left Germany for Shanghai, China. Eventually the Finkelsteins made it to Brooklyn, New York. Max went into advertising and was stupendously successful, making the cover of Life magazine in 1969—the feature was titled “Peter Max: Portrait of the Artist as a Very Rich Man.” This exhibition offers a rare chance to explore Max’s early posters. —L.J
