“I am trying to create something that is questionable,” says the Scottish painter Peter Doig, “something that is difficult, if not impossible, to put into words.” Doig achieves that wordless magic, but how he does it is the question. A painter of landscapes and figures, Doig’s art balances precariously between image and atmosphere. His sense of color is incantatory. Hidden inside this church, a single work by the artist is on view. —Elena Clavarino
