Paula Rego: Obedience and Defiance

Sept 18, 2020 – Jan 3, 2021
Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Military Rd, Kilmainham, Dublin 8, Ireland

“If you put frightening things into a picture, then they can’t harm you,” the Portuguese artist Paula Rego once said. “In fact, you end becoming quite fond of them.” True to her word, Rego’s representational works are nothing short of terrifying. Her art comments on the dark channels of humanity, depicting atrocities and tragic world events through a lens of magic realism. She has drawn children sold into slavery in North Africa, painted abortion, and documented female genital mutilation. This exhibition spans Rego’s entire career, presenting 80 works from the artist’s family and close friends. —E.C.
