Outsider Art Fair: Super-Rough

June 9–27, 2021
150 Wooster St, New York, NY 10012, USA

In a 2020 conversation with Justin Paton, the curator of international art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Japanese art superstar Takashi Murakami was jet lagged. The first two questions he was asked—How do you keep the energy up for so much creative work? What drives you?—received roughly the same answer: “I have to survive.” He explained that at 18 or 19, after looking at the great Japanese cartoonists, he said to himself, “I have no talent. But I still love making something.” Murakami was wrong about his talent, and right about his love. This June’s “Outsider Art Fair: Super-Rough” has been overseen by Murakami. His involvement is a handsome homage to artists who bring untrained energy to their work, along with the love “of making something.” Don’t miss this group exhibition of close to 200 sculptural pieces by approximately 60 self-taught vernacular and folk artists from around the world. —L.J.
