Out of the Shadows: Sculptures from Southwest Congo

Feb 3 – Apr 10, 2022
37 Quai Branly, 75007 Paris, France

Bandundu, a former province in the west of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is around half the size of France. Today, it encompasses the territories of Kwango, Kwilu, and Mai-Ndombe, and is a region that stands out for its multiculturalism and ethnic diversity. It is also a haven for the arts. This exhibition will include iconic masks created for Mukanda initiation rites, but also more understated art, crafted in wood. Curated by Julien Volper, from the AfricaMuseum in Tervuren, Belgium, the show presents 150 works that come from artists of the Yaka, Pende, Tshokwe, and Suku groups. —Elena Clavarino
