In 2014, in his first solo exhibition, the Colombia-born and London-based artist Oscar Murillo transformed David Zwirner’s New York gallery into a chocolate factory, a nod to a plant in Murillo’s hometown of La Paila. Ever since, Murillo has gravitated toward painting, a medium in which he feels he must balance “image-making and mark-making, textures and form” with his “awareness of the world and my need to interpret it.” Coming out of this balance are two ongoing series—“manifestation” and “news”—both begun in 2018. These paintings are dark yet spiritual, in keeping with the realities of recent years. —Elena Clavarino
