Oda Jaune: Miss Understand

Oda Jaune, G like Guerrilla Girl, 2023.

Jan 11 – Mar 9, 2024
293 10th Ave, New York, NY 10001, United States

“I am fascinated by everything that is hidden and here at the same time,” the artist Oda Jaune told Artnet in 2022, “just knowing that there is another world that our world is built from.” Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1979, Jaune likes to unsettle her audience. With a poetic blend of eroticism and humor, her work has combined human and animal parts, figure painting and abstraction, and animate and inanimate objects. For her first solo show in the U.S., the artist presents a series of more than 20 new oil paintings and 10 watercolors, all focused on a unique view of women today. Seeking a balance between the whimsical and the grotesque, Jaune comments on the sacrifices of motherhood, and reminds us that human life originates in the womb. —Jeanne Malle
