The artist Colette Lumiere has had many personas. For a time, she was Olympia. Then it was Justine. Then Mata Hari and the Stolen Potatoes. And after that The Countess Reichenbach. Meanwhile, between 1972 and 1983, she was turning her apartment into a living work of art. Lumiere covered the ceilings and walls with ruched up silks and satins. She hung ropes, light boxes, and multimedia artworks. Her own art often took the form of three-dimensional portraits that resembled maquettes for theater sets. A new installation recreates a portion of Lumiere’s Lower Manhattan loft, allowing us to step into her world. —E.C.
