Elves, trolls, dolls, puppets, giant bunnies, strange straitjackets, masks—all figure in the work of Nayland Blake, biracial and queer, an educator, curator, and conceptual artist who goes by “they/them” in solidarity with those who are square pegs in round holes. Hence “No Wrong Holes,” a retrospective that originated at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Nayland’s practice—which moves between sculpture, drawing, performance, and video—lives in the fringes, draws from subcultures and fairy tales, and pushes against the tyranny of the norm. —L.J.
