“X-ray is a very honest process; it shows things for what they are.” This is how the British artist Nick Veasey describes his chosen medium, which he happened upon by chance. Working in a television studio, Veasey was assigned the tedious task of X-raying soda cans. He realized that here was a way to reveal infrastructure, both in people and things. Bypassing the visible external reality of the world around us and focusing on the hidden internal workings, Veasey forces his audience to examine the essence of a subject. “In this superficial world,” Veasey has said, “that’s quite refreshing.” —Sabina Vitale
