There are those who think a gala that features dance and fashion is just catnip for lightweights. But the truth is that dance and fashion have been hand in glove for centuries. One of the most fascinating exhibitions in recent memory was 2019’s “Ballerina: Fashion’s Modern Muse,” curated by Patricia Mears for the Museum at F.I.T. Its thesis was that couturiers of the mid 20th century took inspiration for their designs from the costumes of ballerinas. We know that women of the 19th century, deeply transported by the ballet La Sylphide and its star Marie Taglioni, were soon wearing their own gowns of ethereal white. Conversely, the tutu of today owes its shape to the corseting worn by women at Versailles. This year’s NYCB Fall Fashion Gala sees costumes for Sidra Bell’s new work created by the 25-year-old designer Christopher John Rogers, known for bold silhouettes and equally bold colors. Andrea Miller’s dance will be costumed by the Colombian-American designer Esteban Cortázar. —L.J.
