Nancy Holt: Mirrors of Light

Nov 25, 2021 – Feb 5, 2022
Oranienburger Str. 18, 10178 Berlin, Germany

Nancy Holt’s Mirrors of Light I was first exhibited at New York’s Bykert Gallery, in 1973. Treating light as both a medium and a subject, Holt aimed a spotlight on a row of circular mirrors that were arranged diagonally on one gallery wall. Refractions splashed across the space—ellipses of different sizes and proportions. An East Coast native, Holt, who died in 2014, spent her last 20 years in New Mexico, taken with the vastness of the desert. “Before that, the only other place that I had felt in touch with in the same way was the Pine Barrens in southern New Jersey,” she explained in Artforum, “which only begins to approach that kind of Western spaciousness.” Holt’s exploration of light, space, and perception is embodied in this exhibition, which features that important installation of 1973. —E.C.
