In 2021, Quiara Alegría Hudes—the playwright and essayist who wrote In the Heights, both the musical and the movie—published a lyrical memoir. Made up of anecdotes from her 1990s adolescence in North Philadelphia, the story of her Puerto Rican family is largely a story about women. Naturally, Hudes has now brought her book to the stage. The adaptation distills her memoir into scenes that focus on females of three generations. Signature Theatre hosts the world premiere of the show, and Hudes directs. —Jensen Davis
