My Body, My Archive

An unprecedented shutdown of the Tate’s four locations meant that the Congolese choreographer, Faustin Linyekula—who’d already arrived in London, ready to perform—had to devise a different way to present the work of his company. He took over the empty Tanks at the Tate Modern and, with just a few hours of rehearsal, created a one-off, site-specific dance. The result? A video that combines segments of Linyekula’s past works Sur les traces de Dinozord, Statue of Loss, Banataba, and Congo. Linyukula tells stories about the body, connecting with the ancient knowledge we store physically, in our nerves and muscles, as opposed to what we learn from books. —E.C.
