During a thunderstorm in 1931, the Orient Express set off from Istanbul. Rain pelted the tracks and washed them out, stalling the locomotive and stranding its passengers overnight. By morning, a writer onboard had laid tracks for a 1934 book that would forever link luxury trains with a murderous mythos—Murder on the Orient Express. In an homage to Agatha’s Christie’s masterpiece, the Belmond British Pullman is offering a five-hour round-trip whodunnit, complete with a champagne reception and five-course lunch, not to mention an ensemble of actors and suspects. The British Pullman, restored from the 1920s, features Art Deco marquetry and vintage upholstery; one carriage was reimagined by Wes Anderson. Belmond’s trains, running through Europe, Asia, and South America, picked up where the Orient Express left off, in 2009. —Grazie Sophia Christie
