The lives of Francisco de Goya and Edvard Munch didn’t overlap. Goya died in Bordeaux, in 1828, and Munch was born 35 years later, in Norway. And yet the two artists had much in common. Goya’s fantastical depictions of social and military evil came from a dark imagination and foreshadowed modernism. Similarly, Munch’s art revealed an inner anguish that was channeled into lonely figures fixed in strange landscapes. This exhibition looks at how both artists navigated themes of war, faith, and superstition in their drawings, prints, and paintings. Present in the show is Goya’s monumental print series “Disasters of War.” —Elena Clavarino
