Billy Crystal is returning to the role of Buddy Young Jr. in Mr. Saturday Night. The 1992 film, which tells the story of an aging comedian who can’t let go of the spotlight, has been transformed into a musical, opening soon on Broadway. “To play him 30 years later, they actually have to make me younger,” Crystal said in a recent interview with The New York Times. It’s a good joke, but it’s also a response to complaints about the pounds of prosthetics he had to wear in the film. Critics thought Crystal’s character felt forced, too old for him to play. Now 74, the comedian has aged into the role and Buddy Young Jr. is getting a new life, this time onstage, with songs. —Clara Molot
