Mr. & Mrs. Smith

Donald Glover and Maya Erskine in Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Is there a foolproof formula for making a spy film or television series? Judging by most James Bond movies, there has to be a fine balance between action, gadgets, luxury, and sex. Mr. and Mrs. Smith, a new eight-part series created by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane, takes note. A completely reimagined interpretation of Doug Liman’s 2005 version, the show tells the story of John and Jane (played by Glover and Maya Erskine), two strangers who are hired to spy for an anonymous firm and for whom marriage to each other is part of the job. Considering that Liman’s movie came out at the peak of the Brad Pitt–Angelina Jolie adultery scandal, tabloid heat is not part of this equation. But what Glover and Erskine lack in buzz they make up for in entertainment. Mr. and Mrs. Smith is a millennial extravaganza infused with picture-perfect sets and sociological questions about the current state of intimacy, technology, and materialism. —Jeanne Malle
