The Belgian artist Kaspar Hamacher doesn’t fancy himself a designer so much as a craftsman. Hamacher, who grew up in a forest, creates objects from wood, which he burns, splits, strikes, and sculpts, sometimes with a chainsaw, sometimes with an axe, but always with his own two hands. The final products are the opposite of rough and raw. Their edges are seamless and sleek, yet pay tribute to the natural world. Hamacher’s first solo exhibition in a museum includes large installations and objects of smaller scale. —E.C.
