Latin American designers, despite diverse contributions to fashion, have too long been classified as an Other beginning with “L.” From midcentury icons Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta to more recent stars Gabriella Hearst and Haider Ackermann, the impact of these artists is brought to the fore at the Museum at FIT. The exhibition “!Moda Hoy! Latin American and Latinx Fashion Design Today” explores the artisanal techniques and Indigenous cultures unique to Hispanic artistry yet understudied. Subtexts of colonialism, gender, sustainability, and immigration are also an overlooked part of this history. Expect archival pieces by Herrera and de la Renta along with contemporary creations from Proenza Schouler, Rick Owens, Rodarte, and PatBo. —Lucy Horowitz
