The Harold Pinter Theatre is staging Conor McPherson’s new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s final play, set in a Russia tilting toward revolution, The Cherry Orchard. Kristin Scott Thomas stars as Madame Ranyevskaya, an aristocrat who returns from five years in Paris to find her estate buried in debt and her beloved cherry orchard up for auction. Stephen Mangan plays Lopakhin, the son of a serf who insists the family must sell, and Bill Pullman is Gaev. Directed by the Olivier- and Tony Award-nominated Ian Rickson, the play’s collision of past and future is tragic and comic in equal measure. —Clara Scholl
