Drawing from a longtime love for yoga and meditation, Katy Ferrarone’s paintings are serene, crafted around the concept of mindfulness. “These images are essentially maps of what my mind is experiencing at the present moment,” Ferrarone says. “Each work is a direct expression of staying still and the awareness of emotions during the art-making process.” Circles and squares represent certain thoughts that expand with complexity. The artist’s latest works surface from the personal and social transitions that come with middle age—birth, death, and the oscillating roles of being a mother and a daughter. In paintings both concentrated and radiating, Ferrarone explores the dual nature of grief and gratitude, feelings that can coexist in moments of familial fracture. —Maggie Turner
